Message 5: If it’s going to be, it’s up to me

Our everyday family situations are excellent learning opportunities for helping our children develop skills and learn how to make things happen in their own lives.

We want to teach our children how to take initiative in situations where they would like things to be different.   Here’s where the fifth Strong Love Message is so useful …. it says ‘If it’s going to be, it’s up to me’.

This message helps combat some of the damaging influences of the ‘perfect trap’ where parents try too hard to be the ‘good parent’ and end up doing everything for their children.  This can lead to children who expect too much from their parents and never develop the ability to do it for themselves.

So if your children want  …. their bedroom tidier, to earn more pocket money, or to invite a friend over – do you help them take responsibility by saying ….If that’s what you want how are YOU going to do that?

If we don’t rescue or protect them from these everyday experiences and instead teach them to take charge of the changes they want in their own lives,  then we have the opportunity of helping them develop these important attitudes and skills.  “If it’s going to be, it’s up to me.”
