2. The guards are changing

We are standing on the brink of a time in history when we will witness the ‘changing of the guards’, that is, the changing of world power from the current dominance of USA, to the rising nations of China, India, Russia and Brazil (the BRIC countries). What an amazing possibility. In the words of R.E.M. “It’s the end of the world as we know it”.

The rising nations are culturally very different to the predominant western society’s thinking, including ideas about family life and parenting. These BRIC countries have very different religious beliefs, economic practices, political structures, cultural attitudes – all of which are likely to have an impact on the lives of our children.

Bob Dylan, in a less known song also herald the changing of the guards:

Either brace yourself for elimination

Or else your hearts must have the courage

For the changing of the guards.

What does this mean for us as parents trying to raise our children in such challenging times?

I think it means that we need to take a ‘heads up’ attitude to what may lie ahead of us – the world of the future that we are preparing our children to live in.
